Black curly hair and round eyes, known for her resonant and peppy voice, it is without a doubt that she has captured so many hearts with her amazing talent, serving as a prominent figure in the entertainment industry in Malaysia.
She is no other than Azean Irdawaty, Malaysia’s iconic award-winning actress. Renowned for being one of the screen’s beauties, she has the reputation of having a charming and witty personality.
She first made her name in the entertainment industry as a singer in the era of the 1970s. She released two albums called ‘Rahsia Laguku’ and ‘Kesedihan Di Matamu’ on the WEA Malay Record label.
Her song ‘Kesedihan Di Matamu’ gained popularity as it was dedicated to her son, Benji, who is also a famous actor in Malaysia. Although her singing career spanned for a year, she subsequently became active in acting as she was also passionate about acting and starred in her first movie called ‘Esok Masih Ada’ in 1979, in which it landed her very first award for ‘Pelakon Wanita Terbaik’ at the age of 30.
After embarking on her acting career, Azean Irdawaty’s popularity escalated in the silver screen, making her a primadona in the late 70s and early 80s. She is most notable for her roles in Mama oh Mama and Waris Jari Hantu. As of 2013, she has appeared in more than 20 films, 200 tv productions and more than 10 theatre productions.
Alas, in the early June of 2007, Azean Irdawaty was diagnosed with cancer, currently battling in stage 4. Despite the dire prognosis, she still manages to show her jovial manner and strong will to look into treatment to cure her illness. Such inherent personality touches our heart.
A woman like Azean has contributed wonderful things in the industry and she has indeed inspired every woman in Malaysia to chase their dreams. Azean Irdawaty is definitely the screen legend and in fact, a woman to honour.
