(Hana Tajima) |
Her name has been widely recognized by girls across the globe, her online fashion label has been the talk of everyone's shopping town, and her sense of style in Hijab has opened up the eyes of many inspiring designers and fashionistas out there. You know who we're talking about, she's none other than the beautiful Hana Tajima of course!
Daughter of a Japanese father and an English mother (you can guess how she gets her beautiful name!), this British born designer is well known for her online fashion label called Maysaa, which she founded a few years ago. Her endless devotion towards fashion has brought her to a much respected level in the fashion industry. Originally based in London, Maysaa has now opened its wings in the Southeast Asia countries - Singapore, Indonesia, Brunei and yes, Malaysia!
Hana Tajima converted to Islam about six years ago and her infusion of Hijab and fashion has been a huge inspiration among the Hijabi girls around the world. The unique elegance and chicness in her styles can be seen on what she calls it her 'little online sketchbook', StyleCovered.

(Hana Tajima at Reflection) |
During her recent appearance in Reflection last month, WoM was very fortunate to have been given the opportunity to do a little Q&A session with her at the end of the show. So here's how the conversation went like:

(Shafiqah Shafie & Hana Tajima) |
WoM: Do you have any latest project that you are currently working on right now?
Hana Tajima: At the moment, there are a few things that I'm working on. There are some printed T-shirts that are going to be coming out soon and also collaborations with shoe designers and photographers and things like that so there's a lot of exciting little projects that are going on.
WoM: So you're thinking of making a shoe line as well?
Hana Tajima: It's a collaboration with Mas Angelina and that will be coming out later on in the year.
WoM: Do you have any obstacles when you first started Maysaa?
Hana Tajima: Yeah, I mean the whole process is such a steep learning curve and you go from sort of not knowing anything at all and all of a sudden having all of the answers...it's really difficult, we struggled a lot, but (there are) a lot of luck and hard work.
WoM: Is there anyone in particular that inspired you to design Hijab (headscarf)?
Hana Tajima: I think, (it's) more than designs specifically Hijab. I'm really inspired by my dad, he's an artist as well. It's something that has always been around with me when I was growing up, his work ethics and things.
WoM: Have you ever dealt with criticisms on your designs before? How did you deal with them?
Hana Tajima: Yeah, it doesn't really matter. I mean, I'm doing what I love to do, and if people don't like it then that's fine, they have all the right in the world to not like it. But I mean, you just kind of have to have that belief that what you're doing means something to you and so there's no point in worrying about if the people like it or not.
WoM: Lastly, is there any message or advice that you would like to share with all the women here in Malaysia.
Hana Tajima: Rather than advice, I'm just constantly inspired by the kind of styles and things that I see and just the generals of enthusiasm that the women here have. In general, they are so..like..lovely people!
*I would like to take this opportunity to thank the organizers of Reflection for giving me the privilege to meet up close with one of your VVIP guests that day, your sincere invitation means a lot to me and the readers of WoM!
Much love - Shafiqah Shafie
