Carmen Sheon, or better known as Carmen, had just completed her high school education last year and has been endeavoring the business line for quite some time. Being fortunate for having a good father who is in line with the business area, Carmen began following her father's footsteps at a very young age.
Carmen is now the owner and founder of a renowned online commerce store in Malaysia, Kawaii-Fullhouse.com
WoM had the opportunity to get up close and personal with her and here's how it went like:
WoM: Tell us briefly about Kawaii-Fullhouse Fashion. When was it established?
Carmen: Kawaii-fullhouse.com was established in 2008, but at first it wasn't really meant for fashion products. During the early stages, we sold trendy gadgets and handmade stuffs but later on,
we started to bring in some accessories and boom! It was our major top selling product, and soon more fashion items were brought in due to the popularity.
WoM: At what age did you start venturing into this online business?
Carmen: When I was around 15 years of age, just thought of selling out some of my unwanted clothings which were pilling up in my room. I started with a local forum, after a few months or so, I decided to open a website using my personal allowance and started to import products for sale.
WoM: Was it hard for you when you first started the business? Have you ever felt like giving up?
Carmen: I gotta say yes, it was really hard. Getting the stocks were hard! You don't know where to start searching: the price, the designs, and very unsure about the import duty fees and shipping fees from overseas. Most importantly, also the lack of budget. But I was lucky enough, I was able to find a great assistant to import the products, and a good shipping company. The hardest part wasn't the stocks actually, the database and the web design. Managing the website, the shopping cart system and upgrading the site was the tough part. Didn't really have much knowledge in database, had to go from A-Z. Also, the marketing. Where to advertise, how to let more people know about the site! I didn't even know what was a Google Sitemap at that time! While managing all this, I had school to attend at that time, so I did thought of giving up. But giving up is not the best solution.
WoM: Who inspired you to do this line of business?
Carmen: I was inspired by a few overseas online entrepreneurs, I remembered I watching a Taiwan-based reality show interviewing young online entrepreneurs, I was inspired to do it myself at that time. My parents are also my biggest inspirations, they have always supported me and helped me with quite a number of things for the site.
WoM: Who is your fashion icon?
Carmen: I don't really have a specific fashion icon, I always read different magazines, from Japanese fashion mags to ELLE Magazine. I think fashion is not about the trend or the fashion icon, it's about your own style and if the style suits you.
WoM: What is your favourite fashion style?
Carmen: My favourite fashion style? Now that's a tough question! I like experimenting different looks and fashion but it all depends on my mood. I'm currently really into the dolly look.
WoM: Lastly, is there any personal message or advice that you would like to share with all the young women out there in Malaysia?
Carmen: To all the young women out there, don't give up easily. Every success comes with the effort behind. Effort will pay off, definitely.
