Walking down in the narrowed aisle back and forth, flying 32 000 feet above the ground and taking care of the passengers is not an easy task for a stewardess! Behind every stewardesses’ sweet smile and beautiful face, do you know how difficult this job is for them? In Malaysia, there are active Malaysian airlines (passenger airlines) such as AirAsia, AirAsia X, Berjaya Air, Eaglexpress, Firefly, Layang Layang Aerospace, Malindo Airways, Malaysia Airlines,MASwings, MHS Aviation, Sabah Air and Weststar Aviation Malaysia.

If you realize, you may feel that you have seen more stewardesses compared to stewards in flights. Stewardesses (60%) have outnumbered the stewards which is 40% in the case of Malaysia (PayScale Survey). Most airlines prefer to hire stewardess because of their appeal and females are genuinely known for their high level of patience.

To pursue a career of stewardess in Malaysia, a woman should fit in the general requirements below:

- Malaysian citizen aged between 18 to 30 years
- Minimum SPM or its equivalent as recognized by the Malaysian Government with credit in English and pass in any other 5 subjects including Bahasa Malaysia OR higher academic qualification recognized by the Malaysian Government with proficiency in Bahasa Malaysia and English
- Fluent in Bahasa Malaysia and English (fluency in another language is an advantage)
- Minimum height: Female – 157cm (with weight in proportion)
- Excellent health and good eyesight (not color blind)
- Pleasant personality and genuine passion in customer service

A stewardess helps make flights safe, comfortable, and enjoyable for airline passengers. A stewardess' work begins when the plane's crew meets for a preflight briefing covering route, weather, type of food and beverage services to be offered, and passengers with medical problems or special requests.

Besides all these responsibilities, patiently stewardesses always smile to any passengers who will be traveling by plane, from the first entrance to the exit plane. Just imagine that, these ladies have to wear suitable attire and groom themselves (with makeup of course!) and some will be wearing “high heels” walking down the closed aisle with 200 and more passengers looking at them.

Hence, studies show that being crowded into a confined space can lead to aggression and most planes are flying at capacity these days. Stewardesses say that passengers are more rude and quick to anger these days because flying is more of a hassle, with long security lines and lots of delayed flights (Tesh, 2012).

May be some of us out there have been well served by the stewardess before. Patiently they keep smiling and make sure everything is superb fine. Maybe some of us might think that it is an easy job, well…it’s NOT! Here are the 10 Hardship Secrets You DO NOT KNOW About Being A Stewardess (These statements was derived from Global Travel News, Australia):

However, despite the tough conditions faced by the stewardesses, the job market for cabin crew is nonetheless extremely competitive. Sometimes they have to go through at least four stages of interviews to be selected among thousands of applicants. Being a stewardess may not be as glamorous as many of us think. We should try to be in their shoes to determine the hardship behind their career.

So, the ladies out there who are already a stewardess, we would like to thank you for a smooth flight experience and a never ending smile. If a pilot is called as the captain of the plane… a stewardess should be called as the “super woman” who protects the passengers and fly high above the sky.
